The Vedas and Upanishads cover many topics of interest to human beings, but their greatest value lies in the fact that they show us the path to awaken us from our slumber of ignorance about our own identity. This world of names and forms casts, as it were, an endless spell on us. It gives us enough material to keep our minds and senses engaged in lesser pursuits throughout our lives, and so keeps us away from the knowledge and direct perception of our hidden, real Self, and then suddenly it is too late.
